Mama Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum

Mama Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum

I don't have much to say about this one, this is standard as standard gets. You're just watching me make my lunch at this point.

Even though I never had it before until coming over to the UK a couple of years ago, Tom Yum quickly became one of my favourite noodle flavours. I've grown towards the Mama-brand one as a staple in the house simply because it's the most readily available one where we tend to shop.

This is going to be another simple one, dump everything in the bowl and in goes the boiling water. I like that Mama noodles come with these double-chambered packets for the flavour and the spice powders, as opposed to completely separate packets. Although I guess if you don't want the spice, it's easier to keep the packet somewhere else for later if it's separate. If I had to have any complaints, it's how difficult not to leave any of the broth base paste behind in its packet.

I ended up using a bit more water in this one than I would've liked, but that's alright because the Tom Yum broth is excellent. This is one of those noodles that works really well whether you want to keep the water in with them or drain it to make the noodles creamier. Personally for this one, I prefer keeping the broth. I think the texture of the noodles work better that way.

Normally for protein with Tom Yum noodles my choice would be one that hasn't made it to the blog yet: seafood sticks (or imitation crab depending on your regional dialect), however I still have a couple of leftover sausages that need to be eaten so hot dog slices it is. Again, you're just watching me make my damn lunch, I don't plan these things very well.

At the start of writing this post, I wouldn't have thought to bring up spiciness, but in retrospect while eating I think Tom Yum would classify to me as spicier than certain noodles I've had which had "spicy" on the label. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's flamin' hot or anything, but there is a nice lasting kick in the aftertaste. All in all I think it's a great balanced flavour for a quick lunch.

Meal Components

Base: Mama Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum instant noodles
Greens: Yutaka Dried Wakame Seaweed
Protein: Sliced hot dog sausages

The Scientific Method

  • Dump all noodle contents into the bowl, flavour packets, seaweed, the works.
  • Pour a smidge more boiling water than necessary into the bowl. Hey, happy little accidents.
  • Once the noodles are done rehydrating, throw in some hot dogs.
  • Stir everything together.
  • Enjoy!

In the name of true science, I'm starting a ranking page for the noodles I've blogged about so far. I think I had the idea to do this from the get go but forgot about it. Oh well, it's there now!
